IOL Assistant
Our mission
IOL Assistant was created to support ophthalmologists in daily intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations.
Modern cataract surgery requires integrating biometric data, multiple formulas, and an ever-growing body of scientific literature. Our goal is to make that process clearer, faster, and evidence-based - directly within the routine clinical workflow.
What IOL Assistant does
IOL Assistant analyzes biometric data and combines it with indexed scientific evidence to help surgeons evaluate cases with structured clinical reasoning.
The platform can:
- Analyze biometric measurements
- Retrieve relevant evidence from peer-reviewed papers
- Generate structured clinical reasoning
- Support discussion through contextual AI chat
- Export a clear clinical report
Every recommendation is grounded in scientific references.
The system cites the literature without exposing full papers, ensuring responsible use of published work.
Built for daily practice - especially valuable in complex cases
IOL Assistant is designed to be used in everyday clinical settings for routine cataract surgery planning. It streamlines decision-making, facilitates formula comparison, and helps structure reasoning even in straightforward cases.
At the same time, it becomes particularly valuable when decision-making is more challenging, including:
- Post-LASIK or post-refractive surgery eyes
- Long or short axial length eyes
- Unusual biometric profiles
- Formula comparison or discrepancy scenarios
- Premium IOL planning cases
Rather than replacing clinical judgment, IOL Assistant augments the decision process with structured evidence, transparent reasoning, and reproducible documentation.
Our approach to AI
The AI in IOL Assistant is designed around three core principles:
Evidence first
All recommendations are supported by indexed scientific literature.
Transparency
The system provides structured reasoning and citations instead of opaque outputs.
Clinical responsibility
IOL Assistant is a decision-support tool. It does not replace professional medical judgment.
Privacy and data
Clinical data is handled under strict security standards.
User data and biometric information are protected, and scientific papers used by the system remain privately stored and are never distributed to users.
Who built it
IOL Assistant was built by a team led by Dr Dante Buonsanti, ophthalmologist and researcher focused on innovation in IOL power calculation.
